Firstly may I apologise for not updating my website recently. I offer no excuses other than the growing season has taken over and fills every day with a frantic dash of dibbing out, watering, grass cutting, plant tray filling, moving of plants and an occasional well deserved cup of tea!
So, finally I sit here at my laptop at some obscene time of night to update you, our very important band of customers and supporters, about the comings and goings at Digswell Nurseries and its Happy Gardeners over the past few months.
Christmas was a lovely time with lots of good cheer and spirit all around. Everybody mucked in unloading (increasingly heavy) Christmas trees and stocking up our shop to ensure that everyone had a large range to choose from. Having the right tree is very important at Christmas and the team here were happy to spend many hours holding up and comparing the merits of each tree with our customers.
We were pleased with our Poinsettias and hope you were too. I still admire each day a nice red one I gifted to my neighbour, which is still growing strong in their front window.
We rounded off the year with a lovely Christmas party for the whole team. Loads of food, games and laughter was had by all, despite the heavy snow the day before and staff member Sue moaning about her cold feet!
The snow fall throughout the winter months made the nursery seem rather magical but also rather treacherous and unfortunately we did have to close on a few occasions to make sure everybody was safe. Digswell is a beautiful place in the summer, but very cold in the winter and trekking across the yard to the toilet in thick snow does not encourage the Happy Gardeners in us!
With loss of days due to the snow we started the year behind in our annual maintenance jobs and have been battling to catch up since. A battle we are now finally winning.
Joining us this year in partnership is the team from Watford Community Garden. They are currently here three days a week offering horticultural training to 14 to 19 year olds. They are great; with their enthusiasm, commitment, new ideas and very hardworking teams.
As the weather has got sunnier, families have been flooding back to our play area to enjoy a little bit of secluded heaven! Laughter can be heard all around the site when the children are playing. We are hoping develop a new area later this year (see the ‘Coming Soon’ section on our website) so that families can have a really lovely time when visiting us.
It’s a really special year for us as we celebrate our 15th birthday and are holding a birthday party / community day on Saturday 22nd May. We will have loads of fun activities for you all to do. (See the ‘Latest News’ section on our website). The team are frantically preparing for this, writing lists that never seem to get any smaller! The days seem to be speeding past so quickly. Let’s hope the weather is kind to us and stays sunny and rain free. Otherwise the Happy Gardeners will all be crying quietly in the corner!
As spring is moving on towards summer you should now be preparing (or have already) your flower beds ready for the summer bedding plants to go in. Remember to give any herbaceous perennials time to push through before you start restocking. Over the next few weeks your gardens should start to green up, trees should by now be starting to have a good coverage of leaves. Its worth reflecting on what is currently in your garden before deciding on this year’s planting plan.
If you have limited growing space within your garden, most vegetables and herbs can be grown in containers on the patio. These can be purchased quite inexpensively from most DIY stores. You can either grow from seed or purchase ready prepared plants. So go on, have a go! And remember to keep a good eye on the weather to check for any risk of ground frost.
As the clock now moves into the next day for me, I feel it is time to come to a close. Lots more dibbing out awaits me in the morning! I hope to see you over the next few weeks and look forward to you joining us for our fab birthday party.
Bye for now!
