Holy Family School - Year 2 School Trip
On Thursday 12 May, Digswell Nurseries had a great time hosting a school trip for the children from year 2 of Holy Family School. Working alongside our partners, Watford Community Garden, we were able to provide a fun-packed day of activities, incorporating hands-on horticulture, tour of the site and lunch in our play area.
The children all had the opportunity to make a hanging basket, pot up cooking herbs for the kitchen, learn about health and safety, plant vegetables in a flower bed and complete a shopping list of what they would buy for £20!
The children emonstrated really good knowledge of plants and could tell us all about what plants needed to grow. Some horticulturists of the future I think!
Lunchtime was spent in our play area making dens from our soft play equipment and whizzing down the slide!
The children really were a credit to their school, teachers and parents, and really made our first ever school trip such a success. It was a really great day and all the children went home with their very own hanging basket to display in their gardens.
Digswell Nurseries would like to offer this fantastic opportunity to more schools from our local community.

From one of the teachers:
All the staff were so friendly and informative, the children loved learning about the different plants and how the plants are grown in the various greenhouses and
polytunnels. They learnt so much on their tour of the site, especially seeing the watering systems and the amazing quantity of plants being grown.
The children also completed an informative and fun exercise about the dangers involved in a farmyard situation, which prompted lots of discussion.
We were lucky with the weather so had lunch outside and had time to play in the play area. The children really enjoyed making different camps out of the soft blocks and whizzing down the slide.
In the afternoon the children had a wonderful time planting out vegetables and are keen to come back, to see how they have grown. They carefully teased apart basil plants and re-potted these giving them water to help them grow. Hopefully many will be using basil at home in their spaghetti bolognaise sauce! The shop exercise gave them an opportunity to view all the fabulous plants on sale and most said they wanted to come back with their mums and dads.
All in all we had a fantastic day, a big thank you to Sue, Pete, Wayne and all the staff at Digswell Nurseries.
